Tanchoi is a Banarasi weave in which several coloured silk wefts build small, closely set patterns across the body — florals, paisleys, birds — with the density of embroidery but none of its weight.
Its roots lie in weaving techniques that came from China with trading families, and were made entirely Banaras's own.
